Upper Cloister in Aranya Golden Mountain / Atelier Deshaus

At the break of dawn I wandered in the ruins of an ancient temple,
On lofty trees of the woods the morning sun cast its rays.
Following a path amongst bamboos I came to a secluded place,
Hidden deep amidst lush flowery vegetation, it used to be a chamber for meditation.
Birds by nature took delight in mountain scenes,
In the pond, a mind cleansed by the waters a lucid reflection made.
Everything gave way to silence right there and then,
Save for the tolling of bells that resonates.
An Inscription for the Rear Meditation Chamber of a Mountain Temple in Ruins, by CHANG Jian [Tang Dynasty],

ARC’TERYX opened a new store in Beidahu Ski Resort, on a day that the resort embraced its first snowfall of the season. Born in Canada’s coastal mountains with a harsh environment, ARC’TERYX is an industry leader in high-performance outdoor apparel and gear. With a restless commitment to precise design and production, the brand has been dedicated to improving outdoor adaptability and encouraging the evolution of exploration for decades. The new store’s design is based on the brand’s DNA. Breaking away from conventional commercial designs, the design team adopted warm-toned lighting, textures, and diverse spatial languages, focused on users’ natural experiences in indoor and outdoor spaces, and meanwhile emphasized functionality and a vibe that fits in with the user community, with a goal to create a “spiritual” destination for snow enthusiasts.

HARMAY Shenzhen Store / AIM Architecture

January 11, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Nearly 50 years ago, Shenzhen was little more than a market town, evolving today into one of the largest and most important cities in southeast China. Continuous urbanization and development have rendered construction sites a symbol of the urban landscape. Building parts, stacked materials, and interior systems unwrapped and waiting to be assembled stage themselves as if temporary art installations, a tribute to the honesty and brutality of the city’s inner belly as a living machine.

Wondfo Shenzhou Road Campus / Atelier L

January 10, 2023 Collin Chen 0

As an expansion of the headquarter campus, the project aims to achieve 3.0 FAR under the lot size of 14,290 square meters. When the project was taken over, the building massing has been set already. Therefore, the first mission is to redesign the exterior façade, and then integrate the architecture and landscape. The scope extends to the interior public areas. Eventually, the results accomplish the campus as a whole. The site used to be a quarry, and many boulders were discovered during the foundation excavation. Our initial reaction is to preserve this special “site memory” and take advantage of them. The stones are placed as the feature elements for the gardens which resonate with the ‘genius loci’.

ToSummer Store Beijing / F.O.G. Architecture

January 9, 2023 Collin Chen 0

ToSummer’s new flagship store in Beijing is situated within a 500-square-meter Siheyuan complex built mid-Qing dynasty, located at 23 Guozijian St. This is the second historical building conservation project ToSummer has undertaken in China after “111 Hunan Rd.,” and the restoration alone took a year to finish. At the sight of this 280-year-old architecture, we began by asking ourselves to find balance between conservation and development.
