Camperdown Warehouse / Archer Office

July 22, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

This warehouse conversion creates a flexible three-bedroom residence within the raw concrete shell of a 100-year-old car assembly factory. The original factory building was constructed in 1926, with its robust concrete frame supporting an assembly line of carriages and vehicles for several companies including Rolls Royce. In the late 1990s, the building was converted into basic apartments that did not make effective use of the generous volumes that each contained.

Hawthorn Villa is a villa unit in a group of four, reconfigured to accommodate the owners needs for additional functions within the home and improved connections to its outdoor areas. Generous planning setbacks provide the street-facing home with a surprising large front garden for a unit. It also enjoys a more typical smaller rear courtyard that faces north. Sakaushi House / Taku Sakaushi (O.F.D.A.)

The design of this house is based on two ideas, “Architecture should consist of flow and stagnation” and “Architecture should have Alpha Space” which is relatively public space where people in the neighborhood could drop in. Considering the legal restraints of the site, the composition of the building that can be built here is a house with three floors, including half basement, each of which is about 30m².

Flanked on either side by Table Mountain’s legendary Twelve Apostles, it looks out over breath-taking panoramic views of the Cape Atlantic Ocean and is in equal parts luxurious getaway, relaxed coastal retreat and entertainer’s dream. The architects designed the complex with deliberately pared-down, monochromatic interior shells. Not only was OKHA responsible for the interior decoration, but also designed key items of bespoke handmade furniture throughout the apartment.

I remember the first conversation very well: ‘I have a plot in that neighborhood, it’s right next to the park. I would like to build a simple, discreet house… And practical, very practical’. Maybe she was talking to me about that idealized practicality? The one that we think will lead us to happiness, and then we realize that what we want is to blow the trumpet or climb a very high summit. I am sorry, but what I was really interested in was that park.
