The Gritted Grid House / Gets Architects

Granules of Needs – The brief required a strong connection with designated areas for togetherness and rooms for privacy in this multi-generational private retreat. The returning client desired to live in a more capacious settlement for their extended family. The Gritted Grid explores how a home can be livable for all ages and become a melting pot for the family’s granules of needs. As the couple is growing with three young adult children and four elderly parents; this house accommodates two parents’ bedrooms on the first floor, three children’s bedrooms on the second floor, and private mass for the family lounge, master bedroom, and bathroom. Seamlessly, the unworn structure and massing somewhat connect with the current design through the renovation process. The novel internal arrangement with an extended pavilion is orchestrated around a connection between spaces. The living, dining, and kitchen spaces as the heart of the home are hardwired to those bedrooms as private areas; horizontally and vertically. Inducing respected privacy yet enclosed in warmness.

The memory of the city: Public Garden with a low threshold. Wansanttrak Community Center was designed to brighten up the corner of the alley in Wansandong and create a gathering space to share the lives of neighbors. Various architectural ideas were developed to create a comfortable space for residents. As a small public building, the main concept was to make the building more approachable and open to the public. We proposed to design the alley in front along with the building. Starting with the design of the alley, the architecture is intimately intertwined with the surrounding space creating a lively flow to the village.

This is a newly built for 135 children based on the concept ‘Cultivate Imagination and the Hometown Love. In the past, the owner’s temple was much closer to local people, and children were taken more care of by them. Not only for praying but also for shopping, taking a walk, and enjoying the show tent so that the temple was the place for every neighbor to gather and have a good time. Children play there as well, have good communication with local people and cultivate their love for their hometown. But the good relationship more and more decreased with the times.

The site is a beautiful private land of 8 acres which is a dense forest with lots of coconut trees, mango trees, Nutmeg, Teak, etc. Finding a perfect place for the farmhouse became difficult since we don’t want to cut down any trees on site. By making a grid on site, the form of the building has been achieved in accordance with the tree position.

“It would be great to have a sunroom where we could grow plants and live while looking at them.” These were Mr.and Mrs. Kimoto’s first words at the beginning of the design process. So we created an inner terrace for the plants and at the same time, a space that would act as a buffer zone to avoid the view from the street.

Under rapid urbanization, cities in Vietnam have diverged far from their origins as sprawling tropical forests. The lack of green causes various social problems such as air pollution due to the over-abundance of motorbikes, air pollution, flood, and the heat island effect. In this context, new generations in urban areas are losing their connection with nature. Moreover, the country is facing changes as it moves to a manufacturing-based economy, taking its toll on the environment. Increased droughts, floods, and salinization jeopardize food supplies.

‘Live in the lap of nature’. Every human mind wishes for it. We, architects at 3dor concepts were shown a site literally in nature’s lap, in the foothills of lush western ghats in north Kerala. The site was also close to the popular hill station Wayanad. The young client Binil Thomas wanted a single-storeyed four-bed house. He is a management professional working mostly in big Indian cities and demands a peaceful space in the same piece of land where he spent his childhood living with his parents and siblings. His father was a successful farmer and they had already planted different kinds of plants already on-site.
