Duling Educational and Cultural Centre / Project Mingle, The University of Hong Kong

Our journey began in the quaint Hakka village of Duling, nestled in the verdant countryside of Guangxi, China. Duling is a place where time seems to slow down and the air thrums with the rhythms of rural life. This village, home to a community of around 3,000 Hakka people, is a place where the values of hard work and education are deeply ingrained in the fabric of everyday life. Nestled amidst a land blessed with ample rainfall, but suffering from a scarcity of fresh water, the village faced a paradoxical challenge. The villagers, who witnessed rain showers on a regular basis, found themselves reliant on a meager supply of well water due to the absence of a water infrastructure. This deficiency gave rise to hygiene concerns that threatened to endanger the health and well-being of the community, particularly the vulnerable younger generation.

The land where the house is located has a regular, longitudinal shape and is perpendicular to Campo da Bola Street, in the parish of Mundão, located northeast of Viseu. The solar orientation (from the street to the interior) is West – East. Regarding the topography, the plot has a steep slope, ascending from the entrance. This morphological condition of the land influenced the programmatic and volumetric shape of the building.

1. Where the idea starts. The project is located at Shapotou, Zhongwei, Ningxia, a national nature reserve as well as a national AAAAA-rated scenic area on the southeast brink of Tengger Desert. This is the place to discover the desert, the Yellow River, high mountains and oases, the scenery full of the grand northwestern miracles and the delicate southern elegance. Here you can traverse Tengger Desert on camels or surf the sand dunes in an all-terrain, and immerse in the poetic sight of “a lonely column of smoke rising upright in the vast desert, and the sun setting round towards where the long river flows”.

An intriguing question. What could a utility building in a green park look like?. In the noisy summer of 2019 with cicadas chirping, I was asked this intriguing question. The inquisitor was Mr. Liu Zili, Chairman of Taowenlv, owner of the Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Ave Taoxichuan. Since 2012, he invited Professor Zhang Jie’s team from Tsinghua University to lead the preservation and renovation planning. Once the state-owned Cosmos Ceramics Factory and Ceramic Machinery Factory, Taoxichuan has since transformed into a national cultural industry and innovative entrepreneurship model zone, a nighttime tourist destination, and a street packed with intangible cultural heritage. It serves as a stage for many artists and creators who have migrated to Jingdezhen.

September 20, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

Charles-Foix Hospital is located south of the town of Ivry-sur-Seine, within the former “hospice for the incurable” designed by Théodore Labrouste in 1873. Owner of the university hospital center, the Public Assistance of Paris Hospitals (AP-HP) has implemented to Sorbonne University the two upper levels of the Pasteur building, to install the Autonomy center there. This is the first research and experimentation center on the autonomy of people in a hospital environment, bringing together users, researchers and clinicians. Built in 1964, the Pasteur building is built on three levels, including a low, semi-buried garden level that houses the hospital pharmacy, a ground floor with main access to the street and a floor also accessible by two exterior staircases. The structure of the building consists of a post-beam frame with brick masonry infills. This constructive device allows flexible reconfiguration and ease of interior spaces and facades.

John Puttick Associates has completed the transformative refurbishment of St Leonard’s Church in Hove, delivering an adaptable community resource marked by a striking new timber porch. The glulam-pitched roofed extension symbolizes a distinct, open welcome to the congregation and wider local community. Located on New Church Road in Hove, the Grade-II listed Anglican church was originally built in the 13th century, and the existing Victorian building features a textural facade of knapped flint across its double-nave form.
