Residential Building Elipse / SADAR + VUGA

August 27, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Despite being a primary profit-oriented residential development, the elliptical building, situated at the edge of a triangularly shaped site, is surrounded by a variety of non-fenced, open and inclusive public spaces. An entry plaza is created between the inner city ring, a historical school, and the new building, continuing to the covered arcades with entrances to the building. On the eastern side, a garden with a children’s playground forms a vital part of the residents’ outdoor living space. A promenade along the river canal links the building to a nearby neighborhood. Here, the garage and service entrances are located.

Pearl Block Building / D’Arcy Jones Architects

Pearl Block is a compact cluster of six rowhouses. Staggered in response to the unusual triangular site, the building’s form modifies a common housing type to provide each resident with a generous outlook of the street. This neighbourly gesture preserves the privacy of the surrounding homes and enhances the privacy afforded to each Pearl Block unit. The project brief was to create 4–6 new rowhouses for young families who appreciate the qualities of single-family homes, but are also interested in living more compactly and sustainably. These desires, along with the ever-increasing cost of real estate, provide an incentive to explore an architectural type in search of an ideal scale for family homes in the city.

On the site of the former North Railway Station in Vienna’s second district, we have realized our first residential high-rise. By 2025, a new urban quarter with six high-rises as defining cornerstones will be completed here. Part of the former industrial wasteland is preserved as a large, urban wilderness – the “Freie Mitte” (Free Centre). In exchange, the residential towers around its perimeter reach metropolitan heights.

Water Farm House/ Studio Bark

July 10, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Studio Bark has completed ‘Water Farm’, an off-grid home in Suffolk with a bold geometric timber design, inspired by local timber frame buildings. Water Farm was designed to nurture the needs of a young family of five, moving away from the city, with strong ties to the site and a desire for off-grid living. The result is an exciting, yet hyper-functional five-bedroom off-grid home. The geometric timber-clad roof is the home’s defining feature. Born out of an early study into local timber frame buildings, it soon became its own entity, a powerful man-made form that strikingly contrasts its natural surroundings. The clients approached Studio Bark with a dream for a ‘home for life’ on the family farm – rooted in decades of family history. At that time they were living in Essex with their three children and seeking the quality of life that rural Suffolk could offer, whilst still being a reasonable train journey to London. Located on the edge of Dedham Vale AONB, this Suffolk site features mature woodland and pasture, with a westward slope and a central crest. The landscape is characterized by trees, hedgerows, and two distinctive field oaks, offering picturesque views and glimpses of the Stour Valley through clearings. Designed to be both seen and enjoyed, the proposal takes advantage of the nearby public right of way, allowing the passersby to appreciate it as an architectural statement that enhances the scenic quality of the area.

Architectural characteristics – Like a superposition of inhabited earthen strata in the heart of the district, the unique mud brick façades of this 42-unit building form a sort of backdrop for the exterior corridors. These exterior corridors and balconies determine the typology for the plan, ensuring all flats enjoy double exposure, whilst also protecting adobe façades from inclement weather. Duplex penthouses enjoy vast, peripheral terraces. Between the pedestrian path and shared garden, all the flats are oriented towards open areas characterized by greenery and a calming domestic scale.

House De Marchi / Aalto Architectural Bureau

July 1, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

House De Marchi addresses the challenge of achieving contemporary luxury living in the Mediterranean while preserving the location’s identity and balancing user aspirations. Perched atop the idyllic hill of Bobovišća by the sea, near the monument to the famous Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor’s Three Sisters, the setting itself is profoundly suggestive. In contrast, the house seeks to integrate seamlessly with nature, using Mediterranean drywall that meanders through the low ground floor, embedded into the terrain.
