Tūranga / Schimdt Hammer Lassen Architects + Architectus

The design of the five-storey, 9,500-square-metre library in Christchurch’s historic Cathedral Square supports the city’s desire for a public space that strengthens the community, advances literacy and lifetime learning, celebrates diversity of culture and heritage, draws people back to the city centre, and fosters innovation. Early in the design process, the architects collaborated withMatapopore Charitable Trust, an organization whose objective is to ensure the values, aspirations and narratives of the local Ngāi Tūāhuriri people are realised throughout the recovery of Christchurch. Their influence on the design of the building is substantial—from building materials to physical orientation, there is a rich tapestry of ancestry, traditional knowledge, and culture woven throughout Tūranga.

Ramsey County Shoreview Library / HGA

Shoreview is a suburban community of 25,000 residents located 12 miles north of St. Paul, Minnesota. The new library, operated by Ramsey County Libraries, replaced a functionally obsolete community library with the Shoreview Library as a new regional library serving Shoreview and the north metro suburbs. Ramsey County Libraries sought a highly visible site for the new Shoreview Library. Since the Shoreview Library mission was transforming from a local community library into a larger regional library, a visual prominence announcing the new services offered was important.

Maya Somaiya Library, Sharda School / Sameep Padora & Associates

The site chosen for this small addition of a children’s library within a school in rural Maharashtra, was a sliver between existing buildings and the school boundary, a site that almost implied a linear building footprint to adjust the program for the chosen site.
Alluding to the impetus that children have towards landscape over a building we imagined the library building to be a formal extension of the ground plane. A place inside for study and a place above for play. With the limited teaching resources available in the larger vicinity we needed the inspiring spatial experience to be a magnet to attract students and hopefully other residents from the nearby settlements after school hours.
