Gallery Fumi marks 15th anniversary with design exhibition informed by biology

To celebrate 15 years of Gallery Fumi, the London gallery is hosting the Growth and Form exhibition of “functional art”, featuring sculptural furniture and lighting with organic forms. The Growth and Form exhibition includes new works by 16 of the 28 past Gallery Fumi exhibitors, responding to themes of transformation, regeneration and biological growth patterns.

The spatial installation “Floating Pavilion,” created by Daxing Jizi Design, is presented at the 3rd Public Urban Festival “Let’s Gala” held at Longgang Vanke Plaza in Shenzhen. The artfully-arranged matrix of glowing pavilions illuminates the square during the night, transforming the everyday urban space into a captivating realm filled with fantasy and creativity, and turning it into a public place brimming with emotions and vitality. The installations’ organic forms and the immersive radiance offer an excellent place for relaxation and contemplation in the evening. It stimulates resonance and connections with local culture, and seeks to explore more possibilities for urban public life.

Plaster, the extracted form of gypsum, essentially composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, appears as a good figuration of the BUREAU’s general attitude towards architecture. If we were to define ourselves as minor architects, following Jill Stoner’s book «Towards a minor architecture», working with what is considered a minor material seems quite d’à-propos. It is one that has been utilized to prefigure and anticipate masterpieces in the numerous “galéries des plâtres” around the world, fabricating figurative positive molds of definite sculptures, forever “graved in stone”. The plaster seems more malleable, elastic, and fragile.
