Old Spitalfields Market Holdings / Foster + Partners

The practice has designed, “The Kitchens”, a new food island at the heart of the market that celebrates London’s most exciting new culinary talent. Made with a prefabricated modular steel frame, the food units have a neutral material palette that is sympathetic to the surroundings – the glossy cracked tile interiors being reflective of the glazed Victorian bricks predominant in the Spitalfields area, and the base made from ash timber continuing the visual connection to the market stalls. The materials were carefully selected, the mesh screen, brass signage, concrete counter-tops, and light fittings all have an industrial character that echoes the old Victorian market structure. Customers have a complete view of the food being prepared in the individual fully-equipped food units adding to the theatre of their dining experience. Countertops incorporate stools during less busy times to further social interaction, breaking down the barrier between the customers and chefs to create a more intimate dining experience.

Temporary Site of Shengli Market / LUO studio

The project is the temporary site of an old market, located in Puyang City, China. The original market was situated at an old urban area. After having served for the citizens for several decades, it became dirty and messy, and was subject to intense traffic. For the sake of urban renewal, the market and the old quarter where it was located urgently needed to be transformed or reconstructed. However, the whole process of demolishing, transformation and reconstruction takes time, but a market that meets people’s basic living needs is indispensible. Therefore, it was imperative to build a temporary market to substitute the old one in a period of time.

Yongnian Road, an old road in Shanghai. Yongnian Food Market, an old food market in Shanghai. The road and the food market, which are located in multiple neighborhoods, have forty years of history. People here have become accustomed to them. As time changes, the road needs demolition and the food market over the road also needs upgrading. We believe that one thing never changes regardless of demolition or transformation, Luwan or Huangpu, enlarging urban space or moving populations, that is, better city better life starts from Expo 2010 will never end. It is also the exact reason why Roarc Renew takes this case, better city better life. We always believe that it is not only a simple yet grand slogan for Expo 2010, but also a reflection of all aspects of sustainably renewable Shanghai in post-Expo era. Since its founding in 2016, Roarc Renew has finished a series of projects, from transformation of an old rivet plant MIXPACE to upgrading historical buildings of Carlowitz & Co. by the Bund and renewal of commercial space at Parkside (today’s Joy City), we had built a better understanding of city renewal. We are eager to have a chance to join in more social livelihood projects and implement our ideas about “weak design”, accumulating more experience of various sorts in the aspect of city renewal.

In rural Niger, markets run on a weekly basis, meaning that individual villages never really develop a local economy. The demographic growth of Dandaji has led it to attempt a turn around by commissioning a permanent daily market. Because the current market is organized around an ancestral tree that has long been an important public space on Market Day, the new project stays on the same site, amplifying an experience the population has come to count on.

La Lonja Building / José Alvarez Checa

La Lonja is an industrial building next to the Ría de Huelva-estuary. Due to its use for auctions, markets and resale of fish and seafood, it has precise and concrete functional characteristics, reflected in the numerous regional, national and European regulations. Its extreme proximity to the river and its use exposes the building to a high degree of humidity and corrosion, which demands the use of non-oxidising materials and materials of low degradation. As an anecdote, it must be known, that it is a building that is not swept, but that it is flushed with water directly, which implies the use of this type of materials.

Urban Infill Lofts / CHYBIK + KRISTOF ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS

The five-story building comprises of 14 modern residential lofts and commercial spaces, offering panoramic views of the city. The architect’s urban design maximized the potential of the limited area, amplifying the plot through an irregular polygon floorplan and a geometric sculptural staircase. A commissioned site-specific light installation by artist Petr Dub adorns the building’s exterior. With its location near the center, the building will provide benefits of urban living to its inhabitants, becoming a landmark of the area.

Our clients wanted to transform and expand a two-storey building on Van Horne Avenue in Outremont, Montreal. The ground floor was going to be used for commercial purposes, on the second floor we would create an apartment for rent and we would add a third storey that would become our clients’ home.
