7 National Pavilions at the 2021 Venice Biennale that Explore Migration and its Impact on Built Environments

June 30, 2021 Dima Stouhi 0

Several recurring qualities and topics were explored at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, answering curator Hashim Sarkis‘ question of “How Will We Live Together”. Sarkis called upon architects “to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together”, spaces that are unbound by spatial or social contracts, and are flexible enough to welcome individuals and make them find a sense of belonging in an entirely different habitat. Unlike decades ago, migration today is no longer considered as relocating from rural areas to cities, where people needed to be in proximity to their workplaces. Technological advancements, new work modules, and most notably the pandemic altered the way people perceive spaces, making it possible to complete at least 85% of day-to-day responsibilities from practically anywhere in the world. What we have learned from previous cases, and what we are observing now, is that the built environment needs to be flexible.

Honest House / OGATAYOHEI

Concept – This house was completed from the idea that “a house that lives with human should be honest.” We think that “honest architecture” is an architecture that makes it easy for its residents to feel the quality of the architecture in addition to the surrounding environment, global environment, seasons, and time. Of course, from the row of cherry blossom trees that can be seen from the window, we aimed to create a space where you can feel the time and seasons depending on how the sun shines into the building, the sense of touch, the temperature of the wall.

SOMESOME Bar & Restaurant / MARS Studio

June 30, 2021 Andreas Luco 0

With the vision of dining experience being both modern and classic, trendy and artistic, the audacious brand SOMESOME teams up with MARS Studio to open its new restaurant in Taikoo Li Sanlitun. Instead of blending into the vigorous context, the restaurateurs and designers seek to build an urban retreat amid the bustling retail neighborhood. Intimacy. Like a good recipe always has different flavors balancing out and enhancing each other, space tends to celebrate the notion of neither collectiveness nor intimacy, but rather a fusion of the two. Within the spectrum from open, to semi-enclosed, and to completely private, dining areas are subdivided, compartmentalized, and segmented into “cocoons”, each centered on just one or a small group of tables.

New Entrance of the Domus Aurea / Stefano Boeri Architetti

June 30, 2021 Paula Pintos 0

In the initial years of the Sixteenth century Raffaello Sanzio – and before him, at the end of the Fifteenth, Pinturicchio, Filippino Lippi, Signorelli and Sodoma – walked in the company of Giovanni da Udine through the mysterious frescoed galleries of a Domus Aurea not yet brought to light, buried by centuries of damnatio memoriae, land and Trajan buildings.  A maze made up of hundreds of rooms which, on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of the painter and architect from Urbino, host the exhibition curated by Vincenzo Farinella with Stefano Borghini and Alessandro D’Alessio, “Raphael and the Domus Aurea. The invention of the grotesques” inside the Octagonal Room and the five adjacent rooms.

The village is located in the riverside zone between Pujiang Town and Huangpu River. The village was spontaneously formed by the locals, showing the organic urban texture. As the area has not been centrally developed, residential housing and municipal infrastructure are decrepit. Under the call of the National Rural Revitalization, the local village government began to renovate the original village organically. The lacquer art experience BnB was introduced as a cultural and creative industry in order to attract tourists from the surrounding parks through the cultural and creative space experience to drive the economic development of the village.

Akshar Arbol International School / KSM Architecture

Learning is a process that involves more than just books and a teacher in a classroom.  It needs to be centered around the student and it is imperative that the building itself lends an environment that is suitable for learning.  This was the underlying principle behind the design of this school and the family-run management of the School firmly believed in it.  A school based on the International Baccalaureate curriculum Akshar Arbol, located off the East coast road at Injambakkam, has been designed as a set of interactive learning spaces that connect the different age groups of children in a naturally lit and ventilated building envelope.
