The building is located in southwestern Poland in the village near Opole. The progressive expansion of the city has resulted in the intensive urbanization of suburban villages that have already become part of suburbs of Opole. The plot of land which the building was developed on is located on land that was originally meadows and pastures surrounding the compact village of Malina. The location of the designed building on an open, flat area, clearly sidelined from the existing village buildings, prompted thoughts about the building’s correspondence with such an environment.

Shanghai Library East / SHL

Shanghai Library East, a new civic landmark and cultural destination in the world’s third most populous city, has opened. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SHL), Shanghai Library East is one of the largest new libraries in the world. Its primary function as a center of art, culture, and technology-driven learning reflects the modern library’s rapidly changing raison d’être. At the same time, its allusion to classical Chinese scholarship—the building’s form conjures the scholar’s rock of the ancient literati—anchors it in tradition. “This important cultural center for the citizens of Shanghai embraces the idea of ‘collection to connection’—a space to bring people together. It’s the city’s gift to them,” says Chris Hardie, design director and chief architect for SHL.

Binghatti Avenue Residential Building / Binghatti

The treatment of the facade constitutes a triumph of architectural prowess, drawing inspiration from automotive and aeronautic design aesthetics. The contours of the facade create an infinite textural multiplicity of volumes in which aerodynamics and passive climatic cooling dictate form. The volumetric multiplicity of the facade forms the terraces for the residential units within the development; each providing refuge from direct solar infiltration. The X-storey development is comprised of a ground level, X podiums of parking, and a public amenity floor for the residents capping the podium levels. The residential floors sit above the podium levels on a subtly curved floor plate with a clear datum derived from the site’s curved boundary. Iconicity is placed at the forefront of the project’s design intent and is seen through the facade contours and bold hue pallet used for the finishing of the facade. This design strategy was part of the client’s brief, which entailed a perpetuation of the brand architectural language established by the property developer across their existing portfolio of developments.

“Discerning the by-product of space between residential and landscape design, JD House has been shaped as a graceful abode that communicates the creative enterprise of architectural design in the context of Islamabad.” The house is an embodiment of an ‘out-of-the-box’ design thought process that has been implemented in a unique manner amidst a set of design challenges. The architectural solution has therefore been intentionally executed to set a diverse tone for the reintroduction of the true modern aesthetics of design in the booming architectural industry of Pakistan.
