April 13, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The extension to the Cologne-Lindweiler primary school, an open all-day school, was built in nine months using modular timber construction. Nine classes can now be accommodated at this location. The compact two-story structure with a light-colored facing brick façade and elongated wood-aluminum window elements responds to the existing school building with a calm and clear geometry.

The opportunity to create an urban space that would connect the interior of the courtyard with a small square located on the adjacent Cartagena Street was presented to us from the outset as the fundamental objective of the project. This new urban space would, at the same time, allow views of the rear façades of a notable building, the Casa de Baños de la Guindalera, to be recovered for the city.

Sometimes surprising coincidences might occur. Between 2003 and 2011 we conducted an architectural intervention on Sant Francesc Convent, in Santpedor, to transform it into an auditorium. The project was carried out on a former convent built in the 18th century where only the church was remaining; the conventual wings and cloister had disappeared. In both cases, the architectonical intervention was done on buildings amputated of one of its two essential elements; in the present project, the old baroque church.

In the city center of Pantin near Paris, a 1935 building has been ingeniously converted into a specialty coffee shop and roastery by the Italian-Mexican architectural design firm Office Abrami Rojas. The architects, fond of existing buildings with a story to tell, saw an opportunity to build a unique interior design that would honor the original construction. «After exposing the walls and the supporting structure, we discovered and enhanced the magnificent reinforced concrete and glass domes, which were hidden until then by insulating panels.»

Kiddy Kitty Court House / Kuzman Architecture

April 4, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Kiddy Kitty Court House is an alteration and additions project to an arts and crafts cottage in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne. The owners, AFL player Ben Brown and marriage celebrant Hester Brown, came to us as excited parents-to-be. They loved their charming 2-bedroom cottage in Moonee Ponds but recognized it would not meet the demands of a growing family. Their brief was to create a family home that was light, bright, and joyous to accommodate their future kiddy, two kitties, and their busy, sport-loving lives.
