Convent Carmen / Francesc Rifé Studio

October 23, 2018 Daniel Tapia 0

The old convent of San José in Valencia opens up to the world under the name of Convent Carmen and a new narrative that balances design, history, and nature. It is a space for culture, gastronomy, and soon hotel, that transgresses the conventional modes of expression in its genre. Beginning with an intervention in the desacralized church, up to the exuberance of its bucolic garden, and the explosion of social activities for which space has been consciously prepared. The expressly minimalist implementation of the studio begins with the church, which has become the main access, passageway, and multi-purpose space.

The “Quinta de Gomariz” is an estate in Northern Portugal with documented references dating back to late 13th century. It includes several heritage listed buildings, the most important being the Tower of Gomariz, which is a gothic defensive structure built in the late 15th century. The manor was built at the beginning of the 18th century, adjacent to the tower on the west side. From the 18th century building campaign are also the chapel, the main gate and the walls that enclose the estate.

Highbury Grove / RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN

Highbury Grove is defined by a street frontage of uniform federation style cottages set in orthogonal rows and folded in amongst leafy suburban gardens. The project was required to deal with the heritage street frontage and a lane way to the northern side of the property. The project responds by creating an architectural envelope that orientates to the north whilst providing privacy to the public laneway.

Bridge Building / Luigi Rosselli Architects

Water is a precious element in residential architecture, almost an essential element of happiness. In Islamic architecture, water is used as a balm to restless minds and is often found in psychiatric hospitals. This justifies our manic search of waterfronts, beachfront, harbourfronts, lakefronts, and riverfronts to settle in.

Thames Lido / Marshall and Kendon Architects

October 19, 2018 Pilar Caballero 0

Thames Lido, formerly King’s Meadow Baths, was built in 1902 as a Ladies only swimming pool beside the Thames in King’s Meadow, Reading. By the time work started in 2014 the building had been unused for forty years and was a particularly sorry state. The team that successfully brought Bristol’s Clifton Lido back from a similar state of decay were invited to do a similar resurrection. Three years later the small site team had completed a meticulous renovation, inserted a dozen new rooms for a Spa, enclosed a new restaurant and added a new ‘west wing’ containing kitchens and a function room. From the outset the aim had been to keep as much of the original building as possible.

Intervention in Santa Teresa de Jesús School / Peñín Architects

October 18, 2018 Cristobal Rojas 0

The project configures a new entry point to the School of Santa Teresa de Jesús in Torrent. A single level pavilion stands parallel to the Avenida Constitución, while, on the other side, it embraces the existing magnificent pine forest. The concrete porch shelters the itineraries of students, parents and teachers and provides a shaded plinth for protection and leasure. The different volumes emerge out of this plinth, their shapes cut out in the sky like the pine tree tops.

Lodève Museum / Projectiles

On this complex site, the series of constructions is hard to decipher. Except perhaps for the Hôtel Fleury, none of the buildings really stands out. We chose to insert a contemporary facade as the new entrance to the museum. The pronounced “mineral” nature of the project, both outside and inside, unites the different periods of construction: it binds them together, so to speak, both symbolically and structurally.

HÒA House / KHUÔN Studio
