Zarrón Square / BOV ESTUDIO

November 7, 2024 Paula Pintos 0

A Space for All People – The Plaza del Zarrón is envisioned as a space for everyone, addressing the natural flow and needs of all citizens in Almazán. By focusing on the wall and the old quarter and observing the movement of its inhabitants, we aimed to create a fluid and inclusive link between the old town and the newer areas, bridging the five-meter elevation difference that previously acted as a barrier. This project prioritizes accessibility and connection, allowing everyone to freely move between parts of the town that were once separated. The lines and folds of the new Plaza del Zarrón reflect the town’s pulse and offer various pathways, routes, and spaces for each user to experience without hindrance. This public space weaves together Almazán’s historical roots and contemporary life, where the freedom of each individual—whether walking, resting, or socializing—is at the heart of its design.

Lloyd Yard Rotterdam Block / WE architecten + Paul de Ruiter Architects + ZUS

November 1, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

At the Rotterdam Lloyd Pier, ships used to dock, sailors unloaded their goods, and ships departed for the Dutch East Indies. The streetscape of this historic port area was defined by large sheds and warehouses. In 2024, this place has been transformed into a lively residential and working area. Lloyd Yard, with 136 energy-neutral homes, a series of different outdoor spaces and a catering facility, is the final piece of this transformation. To emphasise the port history of the Lloydkwartier, the completed buildings are robust and unpolished. In addition, it is a permeable block, anchored in its surroundings. High gates provide access to the adventurous, sheltered from the wind, courtyard. The eye-catcher of the building is the ‘Maaswindow’, a big opening in the block with swing, which offers a phenomenal view of the Maas and is accessible to all residents.

Sistemazione Spazio Pubblico Via Cademario / Enrico Sassi Architetto

October 6, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The project redefines the public space affected by the redevelopment of the road axis of “via Cademario”; a road link that crosses the historic center of Bioggio connecting the important road of the Strada Regina (Lugano – Ponte Tresa connection) with the above Malcantone municipalities. The intervention consists of a series of public space reconnection/redevelopment projects and was carried out in synergy with the renewal of the cantonal road that crosses the nucleus for a total length of 185 m. The project includes the entirety of the spaces intended for pedestrian circulation. It starts downstream with the “gateway” of the municipality (area with fountain and green spaces), continues with the reconnection with the “Piazza degli orti”, public transport stops, and ends upstream with the entrance to the Town Hall building. The pedestrian paths were paved with natural stone of different types (1’100 m2), new green areas were created (128 m2), and a fountain with waterfall was built (31 m2)

Piazza Matteotti Public Gardens / Pool landscape

September 29, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

The proposal for the requalification of Piazza Matteotti’s public gardens offered an opportunity to re-design a historic place from the early 1900s, which had been distorted by stratification of subsequent interventions, and to restore a new identity to the gateway to Castiglion Fiorentino’s historic center (Arezzo -Tuscany), providing citizens with a welcoming and vital space in one of the most beautiful terraces on the Val di Chiana.

Reconstruction Uspenska Square in Dnipro / Architectural Team of Dmytro Volyk and Ksenia Donetska

September 27, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

Uspenska Square in Dnipro is one of the oldest squares in the city of one million people. Designed in the early 19th century, it was an important infrastructure element and the heart of public interactions. Now, it is part of a global system of planning elements located in the historic center. In the 19th century, the square was home to the majestic Assumption Cathedral with a public garden, and it was a significant attraction point for townspeople. During the Soviet era, the cathedral lost its traditional function and architecture, and the space around it also stagnated.

Terrazza Biandrà Elevated Plaza / Park Associati

September 11, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

An elevated plaza, a discreet iconic place sharing the same material qualities with the surrounding historical environment – In the heart of Milan, in Piazza Cordusio, the restoration of the open space at the top of a building by Luca Beltrami commissioned by Countess Celeste Dario-Biandrà, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, generated an original place that slots into the built landscape of the nineteenth-century heart of the city. Made of specially designed triangle-cut handmade terracotta tiles of different shades of color, the flooring of this new space shares its material qualities with those of Milan’s roofs. Also covered in terracotta, the parapets create the impression of the building’s pitched roof curving and extending onto the terrace. This creates an elevated plaza with a mimetic appearance, to which the noble materiality of terracotta lends uniqueness and understated elegance.

Woven Passage to Cloudy Peaks & Sky Ring / line+ studio

August 27, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

Xiayanbei Village, situated on the eastern Zhejiang mountain ridge within the 19 Peaks Scenic Area, is becoming a popular destination for outdoor travel. The ” Woven Passage to Cloudy Peaks ” and ” Sky Ring ” are part of the initial phase of the scenic area’s enhancement project. These installations aim to address typical challenges in rural development—such as limited funding, land scarcity, and homogeneity—while establishing a unique identity. The design strategy combines localization (grounded) and differentiation (elevated) to serve as both the scenic area’s entrance and a landmark, capturing the village’s cultural essence and natural beauty while introducing new daily experiences for villagers and visitors alike.
