Heatherwick Studio Unveils the Design for the Harley-Davidson Campus and Community Park in Milwaukee

Heatherwick Studio has been commissioned to redesign and transform a central element of Harley-Davidson’s Headquarters in Milwaukee, US, the Juneau Avenue campus. The location is set to become a public park and green gathering space for the employees of the motorcycle company, as well as for the local community. In its center, the park features a large-scale amphitheater and sunken multi-use events space designed to be accessible to motorcycle riders. The project is set to break ground in 2023, with the park becoming available for use by the summer of 2024.

Erler House posed the task of designing a single-family house, a task that the professional house-building industry carries out hundreds of times a day with dazzling speed but an optimized variation. This unfortunately leaves the little potential for appropriation or a desire to think outside the box. By contrast, the centuries-old village structure, despite having taken some damage over the years, still held architectural potential and we used this to our advantage.

A rural lot on the outskirts of Loja, with an irregular topography allows the exploration of a composition with volumes of different proportions in a productive rural house based on the logic of production systems and circular economy. The location seeks to blend in, but at the same time to open up to the landscape, therefore, one of the design premises was to establish layers of the landscape according to the routes and pauses that the spatial arrangement of the house allows.

The PAVILION / VIASCAPE design

Breakthrough : Rebuilding the daily public life for the residents
The Pavilion is located in XiangDong village, a Huangpu riverside community that is composed of mostly grungy apartment buildings.  480 local families live here in a room of only 10 square meters of clear floor space. The designer applied a positive design approach with a focus on a questionnaire survey and interviews as a start. With this method, the final design provides a reconstructed space that maintains local inhabitants’ daily life.
