Within various – if not all – architectural programs, there is a function that is an essential and common requirement: the bathroom. A residence, office, commercial space, theater, museum, religious space, park, or school can only be designed with it. In some countries, public toilets are part of urban infrastructure like public transport or waste collection. A fundamental human right, although denied to a considerable portion of the global population, the toilet follows a historical evolution. Modernity brought with it the separation between public and private, and the room became increasingly reserved in Western society.

One of the most important challenges in architecture, when it comes to creating spaces that work for everyone, is the diversity that exists in people, their needs, and how to integrate them into a design. Disabilities are more than a condition; they are a way of living according to human diversity that requires architectural solutions of equivalent multiplicity.

In this Bengaluru home, located in an exclusive gated community in the eastern part of the city, our first impulse was to respond to the leafy neighborhood, especially the row of majestic Kadamba fruit trees on the road that flanks its north entrance. We were keen on a vocabulary of natural materials and an architectural expression that would gently step up from the street. The 100 ft long north boundary wall takes the form of a stone Jaali, crafted entirely out of local Sadharhalli stone by skilled masons. It is a contemporary reference to the liberal use of this stone as means of securing land in rural Karnataka. The repetitive vertical pieces of stone interlock into horizontal bands with tongue and groove joinery and an absence of mortar, referencing the age-old traditional techniques of stone building in the region. A central entrance portal with a yellow door and polished cement surround punctuates the Jaali and guides one into an entrance court and then to the main door.

The road to Jakcheonjeong Valley at the foot of Shinbulsan Mountain in Ulsan City is covered with pink cherry blossom leaves every early April and brings a different landscape. As you walk along this cherry blossom road, you will find Inalit Cafe with its simple concrete volume.

The house is a 5-bedroom house with a GFA of about 650 sqm. located in a private alley, so the environment around is very safe and calm. The Design brief from the owner was a reference image of a Japanese stone courtyard at Ryoanji Temple in Japan. The owner wanted to have a similar kind of stone court in the house.  There were also site issues from the noise from a few Mosques around the area, and the bad smell from a dumpsite when it rains. Typically, in our tropical climate, we try to avoid an enclosed courtyard due to the strong sunlight and heat. This house was an exception we made a different design approach. We made it outside-in. We brought the stone court inside the control environment from noise and smell and deal with the rest.
