tadao ando has completed the design of ‘152 elizabeth’, a luxury residential building located in new york’s nolita neighborhood. the project, which was fully unveiled in 2015, is the japanese architect’s first residential development in the city and contains a total of seven homes. conceived as ‘sanctuary’, the development’s acoustically enhanced façade system has been designed to ensure that inhabitants have tranquil home environments despite the busy downtown location.

152 elizabeth is developed by sumaida + khurana in partnership with nahla capital, with the former also providing the backing for álvaro siza’s first project in new york. the development team were eager to work with ando and even traveled to his studio in osaka to spend time with the 1995 pritzker laureate. the building’s interiors have been designed by gabellini sheppard associates, the firm also serving as the project’s architect of record.

behind a façade made of poured-in-place concrete and floor-to-ceiling windows are seven residences. the building’s lobby features an ando-designed ‘water wall’ as well as a fog and light installation created by gabellini sheppard. each floor is occupied by one bespoke residence that has been crafted to convey warmth and elegance with meticulous detail. while cultivating an open-plan approach, the interiors simultaneously allow for privacy.

designed with art collectors in mind, the project includes a dehumidification system in each home. the building also offers an automated garage with parking spaces available for purchase, a 24-hour doorman, and additional private storage. the building will also include a monumental green wall on its southern façade, designed by m. paul friedberg and partners. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
