The project includes the construction of a new library and the refurbishment and upgrading of existing buildings. Villa von Bülow, a neoclassical building from the 19th century, is listed as a historical monument and has been carefully restored. The former nurses’ residence of the adjacent hospital, dating back to the 1970s, has been incorporated into the research campus, also refurbished and repurposed as an administrative building. A delicate glass bridge connects the new with the existing buildings, creating an exciting interplay between old and new and a dynamic sense of identity.

Long-Cyuan Elementary School Library / Studio In2

July 13, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

Long-Cyuan Elementary School is a hundred-year-old school known for calligraphy, which inspires the library’s interior design. The library space gives off a reserved and serene atmosphere, centering around the core ideas of “meaning” and “quietness.” By “meaning,” we aim to give meanings to the space and convey the design discourse: “A character should be written in one stroke; even when it is not, the lineage should not be broken,” which is inspired by cursive script in calligraphy.

Alpharetta Arts Center / Houser Walker Architecture

July 1, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

The Alpharetta Art Center repurposes a 10,000 sf public library, designed in 1986 by Atlanta architect Anthony Ames. A cornerstone of the City of Alpharetta’s “Garden and Arts District”, the structure and grounds feature improved pedestrian circulation through a park-like landscape, with sculptures, outdoor gathering and performance spaces, and new connections back to Alpharetta’s burgeoning downtown. Active studio production programs will relocate to the new center and will benefit from larger studios with controllable, natural light and a large gallery and black box theater to engage the community.

Juanzong Books and Eureka! Touring Library at Aranya / genarchitects

Bookstore – Juanzong Books is located at the Anaya Art Center in Qinhuangdao. It was originally a coffee shop with two spaces connected together, one high and one low, about 100 square meters in total. The clear height of the high space is 6m. Guests enter from the second floor of the Art Center and walk down the stairs to the concierge. The low space is only 2.5m high and opens towards an outdoor sunken theater. Due to the construction period being only one month, we have retained all walls and floors without any hidden construction work and only changed the atmosphere of the space by replacing the suspended ceiling and furniture. Since it is an architectural bookstore, it should have a corresponding atmosphere, not too fashionable or too exquisite. The items in the space should be simple and direct, creating a sense of ‘workspace’. The lighting should also use a suitable color temperature for work, instead of the usual warm feeling. We designed all the pendant lamps and bookshelves that shaped the bookstore’s personality and chose a classic form — also an anonymous form — with a long history of drawing tables and stools. We envisioned the space filled with picture albums, drawings, and models that could withstand some messiness.

Renovación Goethe-Institut / Yemail Arquitectura

The renovation project of the Goethe-Institut in Bogota is rooted in the search for a place that would allow the public to experience more than just the teaching of the German language. How can diverse forms of cultural exchange be brought together in one place? How can simultaneity be activated amidst difference? How can the intensity of meeting days be revived? How can everyday spaces be established for cooperation?

Nippan Group Tokyo Headquarter / KOKUYO

June 24, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

NIPPAN Group has built the most significant wholesale book business in Japan. For the office renewal project, we planned to create a communication library. The displayed 2000 books were hand-picked by employees, and there is a note from the selector once you open the book. You can find the recommendations, memories, and reasons for choosing the book. Books selected by other employees can be an opportunity to find colleagues with similar interests and create new interactions. When you are stuck in your work, books will provide inspiration and improve the quality of the work. We designed a way of communication and new workstyles through the office library, and this was a leading challenge in Japan.

The cultural hub Antipode is constructed in the new concerted development zone of the eco-district of La Courrouze, two kilometers away from the historic center of Rennes with very good tramways and soft mobility connections. Urban planners Secchi and Vigano organized various programs like large islets flooded by vegetation. The site is a vast territory on which were historically armament factories. To make its memory last, some walls have been preserved as well as large trees that punctuate the horizon.

Yucun Impression Youth Library is located in Anjiyu Village, Zhejiang, the birthplace of the “two mountains” concept of “green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains”. The two preserved factory buildings bear witness to the green development path of Yucun from “industrial birds” to “ecological pastoral”. The project was officially completed in June 2022. After its opening, Yucun Impression Youth Library integrates multiple functions to become the most dynamic and creative rural place.
