An intervention of an existing building to accommodate travellers visiting Mérida, Yucatán. The work is located 150m from one of the main avenues “Paseo Montejo” and very close to the historic centre of the city. The architectural response seeks to restore and to leave evidence of the passage of time affecting the building. The impression of time is preserved by scraping the walls in order to show the different colours they have gone through, by preserving the oxides of the metalworks and by recycling and recovering doors and windows.

The Cafe Camptong project is designed to transform an old building stood empty for a long time in Apgujeong, Gangnam, a place having the most urban context in Seoul, into a cultural space. This project began with a consideration about how to build a new relationship between the building with stopped time and isolated spaces and the city. A building can easily change its shape from a market space of the past into an office of today. If it fails to harmonize with its surrounding environment, however, it would just be one of many that stand there without any meaning.

Recovery of Merola’s Tower / Carles Enrich Studio

January 16, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

In the south of the municipality of Puig-Reig stand the remains of the heritage site of the castle of Merola, dated from the late thirteenth century. Due to the documented earth tremors that shook Catalonia in the 1500s, only one of the faces of the defense tower, originally with a rectangular plant of 5 x 3,8 m and 14,8 m height, is still standing. The detachment of part of its coronation in 2016 put Puig-reig Town Council on alert. The high risk of collapse, with the subsequent loss of the monument, called for an intervention to guarantee the preservation of the remains and the recovery of the building for the village as an attraction for visitors.

Restauradores Building / Saraiva + Associados

January 4, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

The refurbishment of the building in Restauradores Square, built at the end of the 19th century, sought to respect the structural features of this period. The building has 22 independent apartments and is mixed use, combining housing on the upper levels (1st to 6th floor) and services on the lower ground floor and in the basement. Prior to the refurbishment, the apartments, although licensed for residential use, were mainly used for office space and services, similar to what is still the case nowadays for the majority of the older buildings in the downtown of the city, where this one is located.
