Shirokanedai House Renovation / ROOVICE

June 16, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

The Shirokanedai House project is a meticulous renovation of a 50-year-old two-storey wooden residence situated in the vibrant Minato ward of Tokyo. The owner, a seasoned real estate professional, had long rented out the empty lot. Upon the departure of the last tenants, it came back with a property built on it. Considering the prohibitive costs of demolition in Japan coupled with the property’s good condition, the owner decided to have Roovice rejuvenate and modernize the house for continued rental use.

Built in 1830, the rural building is part of the typical architectural heritage of the mountain pastures in the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park with its stone walls and traditional wooden tile roof. At the time, the building was used for cattle farming and cheese production.

Calgary’s BMO Centre at Stampede Park is ready to welcome the world, officially becoming Western Canada’s largest convention centre with the grand opening of its 565,000 sq. ft. expansion. Following decades of planning and four years of construction, the over 1M sq. ft. Tier 1 convention facility opens its doors for the first time, not only creating an architectural landmark for Calgary but making gatherings even greater with the ability to host a scale of convention the city hasn’t been able to previously accommodate. “For four years, we have been promising that the expanded BMO Centre will offer Calgarians, southern Albertans and visitors to our city a greater way to gather. Today, it is with immeasurable pride that we open the doors to the BMO Centre at Stampede Park,” said Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede. “The BMO Centre expansion was built for Calgary and southern Alberta, with the vision of creating a world-class facility both in terms of design and the ability to provide exceptional guest experiences through our signature western hospitality. With the interest we’ve seen from the meetings and conventions industry before the doors have even opened, we know that this facility is going to have a positive impact on Calgary’s economy by bolstering the tourism and hospitality sectors. We built this for our future, and we look forward to realizing the success of the expansion in the decades to come.”

House K / Kii inc.

We designed a residence that doubles as a workspace in a 50-year-old apartment building on high ground in the heart of the city. The building stands on a hillside in the shape of a mortar facing a nearby river. Because of the change in zoning across the road, there are no tall buildings in front of the apartment, and the balcony offers a wide view of the city stretching out to the horizon, merging with the sky.

Sa Taronja House / beef architekti

June 12, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Sa Taronja is a unique place in the town of Andratx, nestled at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains on the island of Mallorca. Up until the late 1990s, it was the largest chicken farm in the Balearic Islands, established in the 1960s by the Burgos family. In 1997, a German painter named Hartmut Usadel was passing by when he saw a for-sale sign on the farm. Inspired, he bought it and turned it into his art studio. But Hartmut’s vision didn’t stop there. He transformed the farm into an informal gallery and cultural center, welcoming artists from around the world to create and showcase their work. The three original 80-meter-long chicken coops became studios, a gallery, and even a small theater. One of the center’s crowning moments was hosting a concert by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. After Hartmut’s passing, his close friend Tina Horne managed the center until 2017, when a new owner took over with the vision of continuing Sa Taronja’s cultural legacy. Stepping into a space with such a rich history was quite a challenge.

Bananeira Apartment / Angá Arquitetura + Estúdio Pedro Luna

June 10, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

Located in an old building from the 1970s, the apartment had an outdated layout that didn’t make sense for the residents: a closed kitchen, a maid’s room, and three bedrooms. Furthermore, the apartment’s more classic style, with dark wood floors and plaster ceiling, did not reflect their personalities.

Château Cantenac Brown / ( apm ) & associés

June 10, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

A spectacular testimony to the Scottish roots of its founder John Lewis Brown, Cantenac Brown’s emblematic Tudor-style château makes it one of the most remarkable properties of the 1855 classified grands crus. Scottish sheep reign supreme in its expansive parkland. The 75 hectares of vines that surround the Château are spread over the prestigious Margaux and Cantenac plateaux, offering a wine balanced between flesh and tension: full-bodied and velvety with a long finish. Upon his family’s acquisition of Château Cantenac Brown in 2019, Tristan Le Lous became the custodian of this heritage, vowing to safeguard the property’s high standards and quality. A future project was thus unveiled: the building of a cellar from raw earth and untreated wood.

Beck Barn / Benjamin Wilkes

June 7, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Beck Barn is located on the periphery of the village of Linton-in-Craven, a Conservation Area within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, immediately adjacent to Grade II* listed Fountaine’s Hospital. The original barn is a typical example of vernacular construction associated with traditional farming practices commonly found throughout the National Park. These field barn structures make a major contribution to the wider landscape character and scenic beauty of the area. However, many of these structures are no longer suitable for modern agricultural practices, leaving them without purpose.
