Xianfeng Community Renovation / Atelier cnS + GZUPDS

April 19, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Located in the center of Shiqiao sub-district of Panyu, Xianfeng Community has been the political and commercial center of Panyu since ancient times and is the epitome of Panyu’s history and culture for over a thousand years. Xianfeng Community has prominent clan settlement culture and rich industrial and commercial trade cultural relics. Since the 21st century, Panyu District has been actively integrated into the development of the main urban area of Guangzhou, forming an economic, educational, and residential agglomeration to the north, which has led to the shift of the urban center of Panyu to the north, and the function and space of the city bridge have gradually declined, becoming a depression for the urban development of Panyu. The old glory is no longer. Under the background of China’s comprehensive promotion of the renovation of old urban communities, this project is launched to preserve the history and culture of the sub-district and reproduce its collective memories, and explore new paths and new methods of micro-renovation that are different from the general practice.

Jianghuai Little Theater / SEU-ARCH

April 17, 2023 Collin Chen 0

The project is located in Xuyi, Jiangsu Province, with Huaihe River in the northwest and the First Mountain in the southeast, adjacent to the First Mountain Historic District. The existing building on the site is a three-way courtyard, currently vacant, with an abandoned water tower in the backyard. Drinking tea and watching Huangmei Opera is very popular in the local area. The openness of the teahouse-style small theater is in line with the simplicity and lightness of Huangmei Opera. In terms of space and function positioning, it is not limited to conventional theater interpretation, but to build a small theater based on the local characteristic Huangmei Opera, combine with the local taste of Yushan Tea, and introduce the traditional cultural exhibition and salon space of intangible cultural heritage to form a “Huangmei Opera+” characteristic cultural museum.

The project is an extension and renovation of an existing Victorian terrace. It was conceived as a prototype for urban dense living, where the development has been thoughtfully maximized within local planning constraints. The traditional type of terraced house backed by a garden has been transformed into a new type – a patio house. It successfully responds to the challenge of making experientially rich dwellings within the context of congested cityscape.
