House B / Whispering Smith

June 1, 2020 Valeria Silva 0

House B is the middle house in a development by Whispering Smith’s Director, Kate Fitzgerald, a project that has become one of the most informative case studies of best practice urban infill in Perth. In a city famous for demolishing suburban character to make way for ubiquitous ‘Mcmansions’ House B is an important project because it exemplifies the value a mindful architect can place on existing built and landscape character as leaders of development.

The Klotski Building / Graham Baba Architects

June 1, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

The Klotski is a three-story, mixed-use infill building situated in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Close to downtown, the area is noted for its dynamic mix of commercial, manufacturing, and residential uses. Reflecting the eclectic vibrancy and gritty nature of the neighborhood, the 10,041-square-foot CMU and steel-framed building houses a beer hall, an office, a maker space, a studio, and a small caretaker’s apartment. Riffing on the idea of shifting uses and planes, the design takes its visual cue from a sliding tile puzzle, also known as a klotski, where the object is to rearrange tiles to solve the puzzle. The puzzle is expressed on the south-facing exterior of the building through the use of 7’x10’ perforated metal screens. The screens slide up and down, enabling users to change the screens position for sun shading and privacy, and in response to seasonal variations in daylight.

June 1, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

The family villa is built just a few hundred meters away from the Baltic sea shore, where water, sand, pebbles and pines all mix together. Views, experiences and sounds of the surrounding nature accompany one’s approach to the villa and fill the interior with its calm presence. Local materials used in exterior and interior blend the building to the natural Baltic seaside.

The space was designed for the 2019 CASACOR SC and can be described as a “living bedroom”. The 40m² room is an invitation to rest and comfort. The name comes from the expression “to be on cloud nine” which represents a state of happiness and satisfaction. Cloud Nine is the materialization of this state, translated into a contemporary and simple environment.
